Not long after Sherlock Holmes first began appearing in The Strand Magazine, his popularity created a market for many imitations and parodies that would cater to the public's appetite for Holmes and similar detective stories. This practice continues to flourish in the present day, and has led to a collection of thousands of apocryphal adventures unrivalled by any other fictional character.
