Getting Started with NYTimes.com
NYTimes.com provides access to the latest news articles from the New York Times newspaper (available in English, Chinese and Spanish). NYTimes Cooking is also included, but the Crossword and TimesMachine are not.
What you need
- A valid Toronto Public Library card
- A computer, phone or tablet with an internet connection
- A NYTimes.com account (for remote access)
- The New York Times app for iOS or Android (if using a phone or tablet)
- The New York Times Cooking app for iOS (optional)
NYTimes.com is a third-party service that is governed by its own privacy policy and practices, not the library's. We recommend that you consult their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
Using NYTimes.com on a library computer
On any library computer, go to nytimes.com. You do not need to sign in.
Using NYTimes.com remotely
If you do not have a NYTimes.com account, you will need to create an account in order to gain access. People with a paid subscription will need to create a separate account using the instructions below.
Create a NYTimes.com account
- Go to NYTimes.com and click on the Access Online button. Enter your library card number and PIN.
- Select Create Account. Enter a valid email address, create a password, then select Other/Non-Academic under type of user.
- You will be issued a pass that will allow you 72 hours of complimentary access. You will get a message that indicates when your pass expires and a link to go to NYTimes.com.
- While your pass is active, go directly to nytimes.com and sign in with your NYTimes.com account. The pass is linked to your account until it expires.
- Once the pass has expired, you can sign in again through NYTimes.com to get a new pass.
If you have a basic NYTimes.com account
- Go to NYTimes.com and click on the Access Online button. Enter your library card number and PIN.
- Select Log in here, enter your email address and password, then select Other/Non-Academic under type of user.
If you have a paid NYTimes.com account
If you already pay for a NYTimes subscription, you will need to create another account to access your Toronto Public Library pass. Follow the instructions above using a different email address than the one you use for your existing NYTimes account.
Use NYTimes.com on a phone or tablet
If no passes are available
There is a daily limit on the number of passes. If all passes are in use, try again later in the day. Passes become available throughout the day.
Full-text New York Times articles are available from 1985 to the current day through several databases.
