Getting Started with The New York Times
The New York Times provides access to the latest news articles from The New York Times newspaper. The New York Times is available in English, Chinese and Spanish. NYT Cooking and WireCutter are also included, but Games, The Athletic and TimesMachine are not.
What you need
- A valid Toronto Public Library card
- A computer, phone or tablet with an internet connection
- A New York Times account (for remote access)
- The NYTimes app for iOS or Android (if using a phone or tablet)
- The NYTimes Cooking app for iOS (optional)
New York Times is a third-party service that is governed by its own privacy policy and practices, not the library's. We recommend that you consult their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
Reading The New York Times on a library computer
On any library computer, go to nytimes.com. You do not need to sign in.
Reading The New York Times outside of a library
The first time you access The New York Times from outside of a library branch, you will need to create a New York Times account.
- Go to The New York Times and click on the title.
- Enter your TPL username or library card number and PIN/password.
- Select Create Account.
- Enter a valid email address and create a password, then select Create account. You will be issued a pass that allows for 72 hours of complimentary access. You will see a message that indicates the date and time that your pass expires and a link to get started with News, Cooking and WireCutter.
- While your pass is active, you can go directly to nytimes.com and sign in with your New York Times account. The pass is linked to your New York Times account until it expires.
- Once the pass has expired, you can get a new one by going to The New York Times resource page, signing in with your library card/username and then logging into your New York Times account .
Use NYTimes apps on a phone or tablet
If no passes are available
There is a limit on the number of passes. If all passes are in use, try again later in the day. Passes become available throughout the day.
The digital edition of today’s New York Times newspaper is available through PressReader. Each daily edition is available on PressReader for 90 days. Full-text New York Times articles are available from 1985 to the current day through several databases.
