Using the Library

Access a wide range of services with your library card, including entertainment, information and educational resources. We've curated a selection of services to kickstart your journey – the rest is up to you to explore.

Library cards

New cards

To register for a library card, bring your valid and current name and address identification to any library branch.

Digital Access Cards

Register for a Digital Access Card to get immediate access to Toronto Public Library’s digital resources and services.

Expired cards and card renewal

Library cards expire annually. Renew your library card in branch or online (if eligible).

Lost library cards

If your card has been lost or stolen, immediately contact any library branch by phone or visit in person.

Lending services

Borrowing materials

Borrow physical and digital materials in branch and online. Manage your account online, or visit a branch near you for assistance.

Returning materials

You can return most items to any branch or bookmobile stop.

Exceptions

The following items must be returned to the same branch you borrowed them from:

  • Book club sets
  • Carbon dioxide monitors
  • Interlibrary loans
  • Musical instruments
  • Tech kits (Arduino, audio recording and Raspberry Pi)
  • Toronto Reference Library picture collections
  • Wi-Fi hotspots

Renewing materials

You can renew most materials, if there are sufficient copies available.

Renew materials online, in person at a branch, or by phone—either by calling a branch or the renewal line.

Placing Holds

Place an online request to have a book, movie, or other material delivered to your preferred library branch.

You may want to place a hold if the item you want is:

  • Currently on loan to another customer
  • At a location that is not convenient for you to get to
  • Currently on order but not yet received by the library

Manage Holds

If you need to make changes to your holds, several options are available. Manage your account online or visit a branch for assistance.

Fees

We do not charge fees for late items. Items overdue for 30 days or more will be considered lost and a charge will be applied to your account.

Computer and digital services

Wireless Internet Access

Access free wireless internet service at any branch using a personal device.

Reserve a Computer

Reserve a public computer workstation at any library branch for up to 120 minutes per day.

Printing and photocopying

Print and photocopy in black and white or colour at any branch. Costs vary by colour option and page size.

Digital Innovation Services

Learn, create and explore with 3D printers, video editing tools and more in our Digital Innovation Hubs.

Scanning

Scan documents and photos at any branch with flexible options for every need.
