TORONTO (Wednesday, December 3, 2014) – Warm up your winter at The Bram & Bluma Appel Salon, Toronto Public Library’s signature event space for guests from the world of literature, the performing arts and politics, with a slate of big names and big ideas. On January 13, we launch the season with John Vaillant, #1 bestselling author of The Tiger, with his debut novel The Jaguar’s Children, a gripping literary thriller set in Mexico in the spirit of le Carré.
January 22 we follow up with Australian novelist and two time Booker Prize winner Peter Carey, who leads us to the cyber underworld of radicals and hackers in his new novel Amnesia.
American filmmaker, director and writer Miranda July presents her debut novel The First Bad Man, with author Sheila Heti on January 29.
In March and April we host award-winning novelists Guy Vanderhaeghe, Jane Urquhart and Kazuo Ishiguro. Ishiguro comes to the stage with The Buried Giant, his first novel in a decade.
As part of our Star Talks series, we present Soulpepper Theatre Artistic Director Albert Schultz, in conversation with Toronto Star’s Richard Ouzounian.
Britain’s Andrew Morton, bestselling author of Diana: Her True Story, uncovers scandal and intrigue in 17 Carnations: The Royals, the Nazis and the Biggest Cover-Up in History.
Norman Doidge, M. D. comes to the Salon stage with The Brain’s Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries on the Frontier of Neuroplasticity and Erik Larson, acclaimed author of The Devil in White City and In the Garden of Beasts, brings us Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania.
On March 4, our 2015 Bluma Lecture will feature former UN high commissioner Louise Arbour, in conversation with the Honourable Marc Lalonde.
Looking ahead to May, Dr. David Suzuki will join us with his memoir, Letters to My Grandchildren.
