As part of Toronto Public Library’s 100th branch celebrations, the library is asking users to donate on June 2 to support programs, services, collections and spaces.
On May 20, Toronto Public Library opened Scarborough Civic Centre branch, Toronto Public Library’s 100th branch. To celebrate the opening, Toronto Public Library is running a campaign called ‘100 reasons to check out TPL.’ “The campaign is meant to answer the question, who knew?” said City Librarian Vickery Bowles. “Many people don’t realize their library is much more than a place to borrow books.”
As part of the campaign, library users are invited to drop into any branch on June 2 and show the library some love by making a monetary donation. ‘100 reasons to give day’ will be promoted in all 100 branches. The goal is to raise $10,000 in this one-day fundraising blitz. The one-day campaign will also educate library-users about the importance of donations. Most people believe that the library is fully funded by taxes but it isn’t. Donors fund many life-changing programs, services, collections and spaces that wouldn’t be possible with government funding alone, for example:
- KidsStops interactive early literacy centres
- Ready for Reading
- Youth Hubs
- Business Inc.
- Mobile Library Services
“We know that Torontonians love the library. ‘100 reasons to give day’ provides an opportunity for library users to show their love by making a donation,” said Heather Rumball, President of the Toronto Public Library Foundation. Donations will go toward the Toronto Public Library Foundation’s 2015 goal of raising $4 million. For those not planning a library visit on June 2, donations can be made in any branch all year long and at www.tplfoundation.ca
The Toronto Public Library Foundation was established in 1997 as a charity to support the Toronto Public Library - one of the world's busiest urban public library systems. The Foundation inspires donors to support life-changing programs, services, spaces and collections that wouldn’t be possible with government funding alone. Thanks to donors, the Foundation has raised $69 million since inception. To learn more about the Toronto Public Library Foundation, visit www.tplfoundation.ca or call Heather Rumball at 416-393-7134.
