Rare engravings, photographs and souvenirs from the library's Special Collections now on display at the TD Gallery
TORONTO (Tuesday, September 18, 2012) – Toronto Public Library is pleased to announce the second exhibition in the newly expanded TD Gallery, a vital exhibition space, located on the main floor of the Toronto Reference Library. Renovated as part of a five-year, $34 million revitalization of the Toronto Reference Library, the TD Gallery will open Royal Fanfare on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 9 a.m.
Royal Fanfare features an exhibition of Toronto Public Library special collections material showcasing royal celebrations and court festivals from the 16th to the 20th century: birthdays, coronations, weddings, funerals and state visits. Grand processions of knights, horses and carriages, magnificent floats, and fireworks are depicted in festival books. Royal collectibles, toys and games demonstrate how the public have experienced and commemorated these grand state occasions.

Exhibit Highlights:
Lavishly illustrated court festival books from the 16th to 19th century documenting spectacular public performances at royal weddings and coronations.
- Images of fireworks, pageantry, elaborate ballrooms and dining halls, and extravagantly decorated town squares of yesterday.
- An outstanding birthday book inscription: For our dear little Georgie [the future King George V] on his sixth birthday from his loving and affectionate Papa and Mama [the future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra].
- A Princess Elizabeth paper doll, educational puzzles, and an optical illusion.
- Photographs and souvenirs of the official visits to Canada by Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George Vl, and Queen Elizabeth II.
