New Library to Open for Jane/Sheppard Community
Relocated branch is double the size

Toronto (Thursday, March 19, 2009) – On Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 4 p.m., a brand new Jane/Sheppard Branch will open to the public. Toronto Public Library will mark the occasion with a celebratory ribbon cutting event open to all, including refreshments and family entertainment.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming the community to its new library. Whenever we open a new branch, we see strong renewed interest and enthusiasm in the community for library services,” said Jane Pyper, Chief Librarian, Toronto Public Library. “This is particularly important during this economic downturn, when free access to technology, books, DVDs, job-seeking resources and entertainment is even more vital.”

Jane/Sheppard Branch is Toronto Public Library’s newest building. It is a public space where people can come to read, study, meet with others, listen to music or enjoy a beautiful outdoor reading garden. The new branch also will expand community access to technology and online services. New features include:

• 7,000 square feet,, double the size of the original location
• Updated collection with new books, CDs, DVDs and magazines
• Express check-out and check-in
• A beautifully landscaped outdoor reading garden (coming Summer 2009)
• Free wifi in the library and in the reading garden
• A large reading lounge with comfortable seating
• Great new spaces for children and teens
• A room for quiet study and library programs, accommodating up to 55 people
• Nine computers with high speed Internet access
• A special preschool-friendly computer
• A new in-branch laptop loaning service*

Toronto Public Library took an environmentally-friendly approach in the design of the new Jane/Sheppard Branch in keeping with its green strategy.

The relocation and building of a new Jane/Sheppard Branch is part of Toronto Public Library’s ongoing building revitalization program.  In 2009, Torontonians will benefit from the renovation and reopenings of Jane/Sheppard Branch, Kennedy/Eglinton Branch, Bloor/Gladstone Branch and Thorncliffe Branch.
