Ontario Public Libraries – Yours to Discover

Toronto, Ontario, October 9, 2009 - Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Culture, Laura Albanese will officially open this year’s Ontario Public Library Week, on Friday, October 16th at the Weston Branch (2 King Street, Toronto – nearest major intersection: Lawrence Avenue West and Weston Road) of the Toronto Public Library starting at 2:30 pm. This event is open to the public.

Today's public libraries are so much more than books. They are a treasure trove of valuable digitized information and equipped with technology Ontarians can use to be successful in today's dynamic and global economy. Public Libraries are recognized leaders in the provision of early literacy programs, career resources, immigrant settlement information, and support to local small business. We invite everyone to discover their public library to uncover a world of imagination, information and lifelong learning.

“The Yours to Discover theme is appropriately aligned with the symbol of the car license plate of the Province of Ontario”, said Marzio Apolloni, President of the Federation of Ontario Public Libraries. “It promotes public libraries as roads to knowledge, information highways and centres for discovery of the joy of reading.”

Ontario’s 264 public library boards will be marking Ontario Public Library Week with a variety of activities.  For examples of programs visit: http://www.fopl.ca and click on the Ontario Public Library Week Link.  For additional local library events, contact your local library for a list of the special activities planned in your area.

Library owned and driven, the Federation of Ontario Public Libraries is a not-for-profit member organization which was launched in 2005 to provide a single, strong voice for public libraries in Ontario to enhance library policies and programs through four strategic pillars: advocacy, marketing, research and consortia purchasing.

Toronto Public Library is the world's busiest urban public library system. Every year, more than 16 million people visit our 99 branches and borrow almost 30 million items. To learn more about Toronto Public Library, visit our website at torontopubliclibrary.ca or call Answerline at 416-393-7131.
