Filmmaker screens
her documentary on the Attawapiskat housing crisis
Toronto (Thursday June 13, 2013) – Filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin will be visiting
North York Central Library on Monday to screen her 2012 documentary titled “The People of the Kattawapiskak River”. The
film exposes the housing crisis
faced by 1,700 Cree in Northern Ontario, a situation that led Attawapiskat’s
band chief, Theresa Spence, to ask the Canadian Red Cross for help.
Obomsawin
will also be leading a discussion after the film and be present to accept a
donation of teen material to the reserve arranged by the library in partnership
with First Book Canada.
