Toronto Public Library Invites Public to Discuss
Additions to Malvern Branch

Project Architects to present design concept

Toronto (Friday, January 22, 2010) – Members of the public are invited to help shape the upcoming interior and exterior additions to Malvern Branch by sharing their opinions at an open house on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 6 p.m.

What:   Malvern Branch Expansion Community Consultation Open House
Where:  Malvern Branch (30 Sewells Road, off Neilson Road, above Sheppard Avenue East)
When:  Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 6 p.m.

Toronto Public Library staff and architects Phillip H. Carter and Ellen Vera Allen will present the design concept for the addition and public square.  Members of the public are invited to comment on the design. For those unable to attend, comment forms are available at the branch or on the library website at torontopubliclibrary.ca.

Scheduled to commence in 2010, the additions to Malvern Branch will feature:

  • a 13,650 square foot outdoor multipurpose public square/commons featuring a reading garden and staging facility for all-year cultural and community events.
  • a 3,770 square foot indoor Youth Hub with a ProTech Media Centre.

The Youth Hub, called The S.P.O.T. (Success, Power, Opportunity, Teamwork) is a youth-dedicated space which will provide programming for local youth.  ProTech Media Centres introduce youth to careers in technology and new media while providing computer literacy skills through a media arts program.  The new Malvern Branch ProTech Media Centre is Toronto Public Library’s second, after the successful opening of a media centre in the renovated and expanded Kennedy/Eglinton Branch in Summer 2009.

Funding for this project is provided by the City of Toronto's Partnerships, Opportunities, Legacy Fund and the Youth Challenge Fund.
