During this annual residency in October, a children’s book illustrator presents workshops, art activities and portfolio reviews for adults, teens and children. The Illustrator in Residence program honours the memory of illustrator Joanne Fitzgerald (1956-2011).

About Todd Stewart

Todd Stewart is a self-taught printmaker and film-maker, and an illustrator and author of picture books. Silkscreen techniques are an integral part of his illustration process and he incorporates them in all of his book projects.

Todd co-manages a collective print studio and runs silkscreen and illustration workshops for children, youth and adults at his studio and in schools, galleries, local business, libraries and artist-run centres. Raised in the Prairies, he now lives in Montreal with his family.

Todd’s books include Skating Wild on an Inland Sea, written by Jean E Pendziwol; Pipo, written by Amélie Dumoulin; Flow, Spin, Grow written by Patchen Barss; and See You Next Year written by Andrew Larsen. He wrote and illustrated Little Moments in a Big Universe and The Wind and the Trees.

Portfolio Reviews

Schedule an individual online 30-minute portfolio review with Todd Stewart to receive feedback on your illustrations.

Portfolio reviews are available on Monday, October 6, 20 and 27 from 4-8 pm. For adults and teens.

Career Talks

Join us online at 7 pm on Thursday, October 2, 9, 16 and 23, for a special career series with Todd Stewart. He’ll share insights into building a career in children’s book illustration, covering topics such as the journey to becoming an illustrator, the power of collaboration and the role of storyboards in bringing stories to life.

These workshops will be recorded and available for replay through Zoom until October 31, 2025.

Class Visits

Todd Stewart will lead art workshops for students in grades 2 to 6, either online or in-person throughout October. In-person art workshops will be held at North York Central Library Oct 21, 22, 23 and 24.

Todd will also present online career sessions for high school and college art students. Teachers can contact illustrator@ibby-canada.org to request a presentation for their class.

Exhibit

Original artwork by Todd Stewart, as well as illustrations by Joanne Fitzgerald, will be on display in the second-floor gallery at the North York Central Library. From October 1 – 30.
