Library Board Meeting – November 15, 1999

Released November 16, 1999

Operating Budget Monitoring Report - October 31, 1999
Current projections indicate that the Library is on target with its budget.

Public Consultation on the Branch Planning Study
The Board received a report detailing the consultation plans for the Todmorden Room and the Swansea and Niagara branches, following receipt of the Branch Planning Study in September. Because three public consultation meetings are scheduled for January, it is likely that the final consultation report will be submitted to the Board in February 2000.

Opening of New Alderwood Neighbourhood Library
The new Alderwood Library, which will be shared by the Toronto Public Library and the Toronto Board of Education, is nearing completion. An opening date of December 20, 1999 has been scheduled. To accommodate the move, the old branch will close for three weeks prior to reopening in the new building. An official opening ceremony for this new library is being planned for early in 2000.

Developing the Toronto Public Library Board's Strategic Plan
Approval was given for the Strategic Planning Process outlined in this report. A Board Reference Group was established to guide the development of the Strategic Plan, as well as to provide ongoing updates to the Board as a whole. A preliminary draft of this plan will be prepared for approval in February or March with a final plan scheduled for approval in June 2000. The completion of the plan will assist the Board in making decisions on wide-ranging and complex issues for the three-year period beginning in 2000.

2000 - 2004 Capital Budget - Status Report
The Board received the Chief Administrative Officer's report regarding Toronto Public Library's capital program for 2000 - 2004. The report recommends that only $6.4 million of the Board's total 2000 request of $12.8 million be approved. The Board recommended to the Budget Advisory Committee that the City's portion ($300,000) of the Toronto Reference Library renovation project for 2000 be included in the Board's approved 2000 Capital Budget.
