Adult Literacy

A learner and volunteer work together on literacy activities.

The Adult Literacy Program offers free, one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing, and math for English-speaking adults aged 19 and older (exceptions may apply).

Our volunteer tutors work with learners to build skills and reach personal goals.

If you or someone you know could benefit, contact your nearest Adult Literacy Office to book an intake assessment.

Who is eligible for the program?

  • Adults who can speak English
  • Live in Ontario
  • Not enrolled in a high school or academic credit program
  • Preference will be given to those who are grade level 3 and below in reading, writing or math

How do you join?

Contact your nearest Adult Literacy Office location to book an assessment. The assessment will take approximately 1.5-2 hours long and must be attended in-person by the individual applying for the program.

Enrollment is limited and not guaranteed. Depending on the assessment results, individuals may be placed on a waiting list or referred to a more suitable agency/organization.

What happens in the program?

Adult Literacy staff will contact waitlisted learners only when a volunteer tutor is available. Participants will meet with their tutor in-person at an Adult Literacy office for 2 hours each week. They will focus on the learner's individual goals and will be provided with learning resources, materials and access to technology.  We expect Learners to practise and study independently between sessions.
